4 simple tools I use to manage anxiety                                                            (that actually work)

Anxiety can show up quietly or all at once. Sometimes it’s a racing mind, sometimes it’s that tight feeling in your chest, and sometimes it’s just a sense that something isn’t quite right. Over time, I’ve learned that managing anxiety isn’t about eliminating it completely—it’s about having small, reliable tools that help bring me back to calm and help me to feel more in control.

Here are four simple things I use regularly that make a real difference.

1

Saying Affirmations: reframing the thoughts:

When anxiety hits, my mind often jumps straight to worst-case scenarios. Affirmations help interrupt that spiral. They’re simple, positive statements that remind me that my thoughts aren’t always facts.

Some affirmations I return to are:

– I am calm, confident and in control.
– This feeling will pass.
– Everything is okay.
– I can relax my body and mind.

The key isn’t forcing myself to “believe” them instantly. It’s about gently repeating them until my nervous system starts to settle. Even whispering them to myself or writing them down can help shift my focus.

2

Progressive Muscle Relaxation: Intentionally releasing tension from my body.

Anxiety lives in the body as much as the mind. That’s why intentional relaxation is so important.

Sometimes I’ll take five minutes to simply sit, breathe slowly, and tense each muscle in the body and then relax. Starting from my head, all the way to the toes. This works especially well when I’ve got into bed at night.

It doesn’t have to be complicated or time-consuming. Even a few minutes of slowing down signals to the body that it doesn’t have to stay in “alert mode.”

3

Using a Worry Stone: A Small Grounding Tool:

A worry stone is a small, smooth stone with a thumb-sized indentation. When I’m feeling anxious, I hold it and gently rub the groove with my thumb.

It might sound simple, but it works because it gives my hands something repetitive and soothing to do. That physical motion helps ground me in the present moment rather than getting lost in anxious thoughts.

It’s also discreet and easy to carry in a pocket or bag, so I always have it nearby when I need a quick grounding moment.

4

Lavender Roller Ball: Calming Through Scent:

Scent is powerful when it comes to relaxation. I keep a lavender essential oil roller ball with me and apply a small amount to my wrists or temples when I feel anxiety building.

Lavender is known for its calming properties, and even just taking a few slow breaths while noticing the scent can help shift my mood. It becomes a little ritual: pause, breathe, reset.

Over time, my brain has started associating that scent with calm, which makes it even more effective.

Final Thoughts

Managing anxiety isn’t about having perfect days—it’s about having gentle tools to support yourself when things feel overwhelming. Affirmations, relaxation, a worry stone, and lavender oil are all small practices, but together they create moments of calm when I need them most.

If you struggle with anxiety too, you’re not alone. Sometimes the smallest habits can make the biggest difference.
