Survival Self-Care Tips For Starting University
Starting university is a whirlwind!
One minute you’re packing up your bedroom, the next you’re sitting in a kitchen with strangers, wondering if it’s too soon to make a cup of tea.
It’s exciting.
It’s nerve-wracking.
It’s a lot.
And that’s why self-care is not just a ‘nice to have’ – it’s essential.
We’ve put together our favourite survival self-care tips to help you navigate your first year at Uni feeling grounded, supported, and (hopefully) with clean laundry.
1. Create Your Comfort Zone
Uni life can be chaotic – lectures, nights out, deadlines, laundry mountains – so having a space that feels like yours is key. Bring a few things from home that make you feel safe and happy: a blanket, photos, fairy lights, your favourite mug.
When the day feels overwhelming, your safe space is where you can recharge.
2. Learn the art of saying no
FOMO (fear of missing out) is real at Uni, but so is burnout. You don’t have to go to everything. Feel empowered to skip a night out or turn down plans if you need time for yourself.
Your real friends will understand, and likely follow your lead at some point!

3. keep an eye on your sleep
Late nights are part of the student experience – but try to balance them with actual rest.
Your brain will thank you when you’re in that 9am lecture.
Tip: blackout curtains, earplugs, or a sleep mask can make all the difference in noisy student halls.
4. Nourish Yourself (Even on a Budget)
Beans on toast are fine sometimes, but your body and mind will run better on proper fuel.
Learn a few cheap, easy meals you can batch-cook, for example a pasta bake, veggie chilli, a healthy stir-fry.
Your future self, mid-assignment, will thank you.
Sleep and nourishment are extremely important and both have a direct link to how healthy your mental health is.
If we are getting the correct amount of sleep for us, the body and mind is more likely to function correctly and when we are giving our gut and body the correct foods, we are helping out our body and mind more than we know!
If you want to thrive at university then make sure you remember these two things!
5. Move Your Body (In a Way You Enjoy)
Exercise isn’t about punishing yourself – it’s about finding something that makes you feel good.
Whether it’s walking to lectures, joining a sports club, dancing in your room, or trying yoga, moving your body can help boost mood and reduce stress.
6. Stay Connected to Home
It’s normal to feel homesick. Keep in touch with friends and family – a quick text, a FaceTime call, or sending a funny meme can make you feel closer.
7. Ask for Help (You’re Not Alone)
If you’re struggling, perhaps with your studies, mental health, money, or anything else, there’s no shame in speaking up.
Universities have support teams, counsellors, and peer mentors for a reason.
Asking for help isn’t a weakness, it’s a strength.
8. Keep Something Just for You
When everything’s about coursework, clubs, and socialising, it’s easy to lose sight of you.
Have a hobby or ritual that’s purely yours – reading, journaling, sketching, or making playlists. Little moments of joy matter.

Final Thought
University is a big life shift.
You’ll grow, learn, make mistakes, and collect stories you’ll tell for years to come.
But through it all, remember: your mental and physical well-being come first.
Self-care isn’t selfish – it’s survival. And you’re allowed to protect your peace.
