5 simple ways to look after you

There’s something about summer that makes everything feel a bit lighter. Longer days, sunnier skies (hopefully), and a little more space to breathe. But let’s be honest, life doesn’t slow down just because the sun’s out. That’s why now is the perfect time for a little reset.

Here are 5 easy ways to look after you this summer; no pressure, no perfection, just simple, feel-good things you can do to top up your energy and calm.

1. Drink More water

We know, we know – everyone goes on about drinking water. But that’s because it really makes a difference. When you’re a even slightly dehydrated, everything feels harder; you’re tired, grumpy, and your skin starts shouting at you.

Keep a bottle nearby, chuck in some fruit if you fancy, and sip throughout the day.

Working with clients in the therapy room I have found that people tend to drink more alcohol in the summer months. As we all know, alcohol causes dehydration and when the air is already warm and the sun is out this can be a dangerous combination. I always suggest alternating an alcoholic drink with a glass of water- it really helps to keep dehydration away!

Little Daisy Tip: Herbal tea or fruit-infused water in the evening feels like a mini ritual – soothing and simple.

2. get out in the sunshine

A bit of sunshine does wonders for your mood. Even 10 minutes in the fresh air can lift your head and clear your thoughts.

However, your skin needs love too. If you’re heading outside, even for a quick walk, slap on the sunscreen, pop on your shades, and don’t forget the back of your neck!

Looking after yourself includes your future self too; sun cream now for fewer regrets later.

3. take a walk, be present and really notice what’s around you

There’s a big difference between walking to get somewhere and walking to breathe.

Try taking a short stroll just for the sake of it. No phone, no music, no multitasking.

Just you, the outdoors, and whatever’s going on around you. Trees, flowers, birdsong, the little things really are the big things.

I love this mindfulness idea! Do you ever really notice what is around or are you too focussed on where you are going and what you have to do that day? A mindful walk can help to give your brain a rest from the noise of life!

Little Daisy Tip: Try noticing 5 things you can see, 4 you can hear, 3 you can feel, 2 you can smell, and 1 you can taste. It sounds cheesy, but it works!

4. Keep your food light and joyful

Summer is full of colourful food; strawberries, tomatoes, salad bits, fresh bread, yoghurt and
honey… It doesn’t have to be fancy or Instagram-worthy.

Just think simple, nourishing and kind to your body. If it feels good and fills you up without making you feel sluggish, you’re doing it right.
Eat what makes you feel like you, not what an influencer says you should.

5. Switch off (even if it’s just for half an hour)

We live in a world where our phones are basically glued to us. But even a small break from scrolling can give your brain a breather.

Our brains were not designed for the fast pace of life – social media notifications, emails, instant news. Taking that time away for even a short time can really benefit the brain.

Maybe it’s a screen-free morning, turning your phone off an hour before bed, or a full digital detox day if you’re feeling bold.

Instead of checking notifications, light a candle, read a book, or sit in the garden with a
cup of herbal tea for the ultimate calm. Peace is better for you than pings!

6. Give yourself permission to reset

You don’t need to change your whole life to feel better. Sometimes it’s the small stuff, such as a walk in the sun, a big glass of water, eating something fresh, or just doing nothing at all. Your summer reset isn’t about doing more.

Self-care is one of the most important things to protect your mental health. Whether you feel overwhelmed anxious or depressed for example, taking that time for you is really beneficial!

It’s about giving yourself a moment to just be.
