Celebrating the small wins: why every step in your self-care journey matters!
Life can feel like a never-ending to-do list sometimes. We set big goals, make big plans, and then we’re overwhelmed when things get busy. Or tough. It’s so easy to focus on what we didn’t do, what we didn’t finish, or how far we still must go.
But what if we flipped the script?
What if, instead of just celebrating the big wins, we noticed and honoured the little ones too?
The small stuff matters
Maybe you didn’t tick off every box of your to-do list this month, but you got out of bed on days that felt heavy.
You kept going when it would’ve been easier to quit.
You paused to take care of yourself, even if just for five minutes.
That’s not an easy task when you feel like you just want to do nothing. Doing the small stuff means everything.
Progress isn’t always dramatic. Sometimes it can be as simple as putting your phone down and taking a proper deep breath.
Sometimes it’s choosing a kind thought when your brain wants to be mean.
Or getting through a hard conversation.
Or simply showing up and being present.
Do you recognise this famous quote,
‘To be in your children’s memories tomorrow, you have to be in their lives today.’
Barbara Johnson

Growth isn’t a straight line
Growth isn’t measured in perfect results, it’s measured in courage, in trying, in getting back up again. And again.
So, whether you’ve just finished exams, been spinning all the plates at work or home, or just made it through a mentally or emotionally tough month, take a second to really feel proud of yourself. You’ve come further than you think.
Keep the self-care going
Just because the month’s ending doesn’t mean your self-care should. It’s not a treat you have to earn; it’s something you deserve, always.
Take some time to plan your self-care for next month. Keep up the momentum to start seeing the difference.
Before you roll into the next thing, take a pause. Celebrate how far you’ve come, no matter how far you still want to go.

In my therapy practise, nearly ever person that I work with is neglecting self-care because they say that it feels selfish. Self-care is not selfish, it is very important for the brain to recognise that you are a priority. You cannot do other tasks or look after others unless you are powering on full cylinders!
When faced with people who don’t practise self-care, I always work with them on building up a self-care routine.
